Homoeopathy and Enuresis

As enuresis is often a slow development of control, the use of homoeopathic treatment can make minor changes with what seem like miraculous results.

A short explanation of homoeopathy

“In his principles and practice of homoeopathy Dr Wheeler, one of the finest of English homoeopathic doctors, wrote that very few of those who condemned the practice of homoeopathy had any knowledge of its principles, to say nothing of its practice, and that therefore it is fair to say in a Court of Science their testimony, however voluble and dogmatic, must be considered invalid.”

Margery G Blackie - The Patient Not The Cure
(Former physician to her Majesty, the Queen)

There is a little respect for homoeopathy (also spelled  without the o as homeopathy) from most western medical practitioners. They have two arguments against it. Both are scientific, as they see it.

The first comes from their training. A drug should have the same repeatable effect on a range of symptoms for all patients. The second is the scientific measurement of substances - in science, things need to be seen to be believed and believed according to validated science.

I apologise to more open minded scientists for this simplistic explanation but speaking in general, these are the belief system of most doctors as regards homoeopathy.

Homoeopathic Materia Medica

Homoeopathic remedies are chosen by homoeopaths on a group of symptoms, but homoeopaths do not limit their symptom group to a single disease. They do not treat diseases, they treat people. So far as homoeopathy and enuresis is concerned, a homoeopath may have 10 different main remedies to choose between to treat enuresis and the whole Materia Medica at hand for rare patients who are not helped by these ten more obvious remedies.

For this reason, it is not generally recommended, or easy, for a person to self treat or home treat enuresis with homoeopathic remedies.  The science or art of symptom diagnostics is complex and confusing. The books that are worth learning from are obscure and difficult to find. The remedies themselves are difficult to obtain without being a qualified homoeopath.

You can buy remedies online and if you have taken the time to understand the principles of homoeopathy and to pick a suitable remedy specific to your patient’s symptoms then you will no doubt have success with it. By purchasing a remedy for bedwetting online without doing any research, then your chances of success with it may fall to one in ten or less.

Homoeopathic Remedies

It is commonly believed that the dosage of a drug should be increased for greater effect. If one headache tablet to relieve pain doesn’t work then a second is taken and will often have the desired effect. This is what homoeopaths call the allopathic way. Homoeopathy reverses this belief.

Their remedies are diluted in a special way called succussion. This is a process that shakes up a diluted solution and it works in what they call a magnetic way, something like static electricity. A drop of a substance is diluted in a glass of water or alcohol and shaken. Then a drop of that solution is again diluted in the same way. Scientifically the remedy appears to no longer have anything but a  trace of the substance within the final product, but the homoeopathic remedy at 3 dilutions is considered to be less strong than a homoeopathic remedy at 30 dilutions.

The homoeopathic remedies are taken from elements and substances ranging from sulphur to snake bite venom, plant sources such as marigold to metals such as gold. During initial homoeopathic testing and research people were given the non diluted substances to take and their symptoms observed. This is called proving. The statistically more common symptoms observed during the proving process were recorded and make up the huge database of homoeopathic symptoms for remedies called the Materia Medica.

Like Cures Like

The homoeopathic philosophy is simply that “Like cures like”. A simple example is that coffee generally keeps people awake. The homoeopathic remedy based on coffee is used for curing insomnia . Ipecac is another, in a large dose it induces vomiting and in a minute, homoeopathic dose, it cures nausea and vomiting.

It is unlikely that any toxic effect will ever be incurred from taking a  homoepathic remedy. For this reason they are referred to as natural remedies. They are however completely different to the natural remedies that naturopaths use, although some naturopaths may use both allopathic and homoeopathic remedies.

Homoeopathic remedies are as complex as any other pharmacy. This is an extremely simplistic explanation and if you need to know more, then there are many books available that will fill in the details for you. The final thing you need to know is how homoeopathy and enuresis are linked so far as curing enuresis with homoeopathy is concerned and why it can be so helpful. That’s in the next article.
